Caryn Mathes is the general manager of American University’s radio station, WAMU 88.5 FM. Since she arrived in March 2005, WAMU’s audience has increased by 1,000 people, or 3 percent. She has also been instrumental in bringing new donors to WAMU. Before coming to WAMU, Mathes was general manger for WDET-FM in Detroit for 21 years and news director for two years.

What is the biggest challenge facing radio?

Keeping pace with new technology. ... People want choice. They want their podcasts. They want content sent directly to their cell phones, and we have to find a way to deliver.

How do you attract and retain listeners in the age of iPods and satellite radio?

By having high-quality and compelling programming. If you can give people high-quality, credible and informative news, you can draw them to you.

What happened to the bluegrass music programming?

We created a whole new station on HD Radio ... that way there is a lot more bluegrass music aired.

How did listeners respond to the change?

They were a little reluctant because of the technology. You have to buy another radio device. We hope the price comes down so more listeners can enjoy the show.

Why HD radio instead of satellite radio?

HD radio is free, while satellite, you have to subscribe.

In what way are you giving back to young people who want to get into radio?

I’m really proud of WAMU. We have a great internship program. Our staff members visit schools to speak with students. We make all the resources available to show young people they can be in front of the microphone or behind the scenes.

Where will WAMU be in the next five years?

We continue to get better in our local, national and international coverage. ... A bigger, better station.
