Prado rides to victory

Prado, 40, had been one the most accomplished jockeys at Laurel, as he won 10 meet riding titles at track between 1989 and 1999 before becoming one of the leading riders in the country.
On Saturday, Prado guided Benny the Bull to a stirring showing. After Talent Search stormed to an eight-length lead, Prado’s 4-year-old colt rallied on the turn by sprinting along the outside lane to win by a length.
Benny the Bull was fourth in the Breeders Cup Sprint last month behind winner Midnight Lute, but was unstoppable on Saturday, completing the six-furlong race in 1 minute, 9.86 seconds. Talent Search finished second, two lengths in front of filly Miraculous Miss, who closed from last place in the field of eight to take third.
Benny the Bull took home $150,000 for owner IEAH Stables, a racing syndicate based in New York, and part-owner James Pegasus Holding. It was Benny the Bull’s fifth win in 13 lifetime starts, as the dark brown colt has earned $468,550.
“He broke good in the gate and sat behind the speed, and he just took off,” Prado said. “I had fun with him.”
But Prado wasn’t finished. He also rode Stonerside Stable’s Cowboy Cal to victory in the $125,000 Laurel Futurity, a race that featured 2-year-old colts.
Cowboy Cal finished the 1-1/16th-mile race in 1:42.80 and won by 6-1/4 lengths. Casanova Jack took second, with Titan of Industry finishing third.
SELIMA STAKES
Bsharpsonata, owned by Cloverleaf Farm II Inc., claimed $125,000 for winning the 1-1/16th-mile race in 1:43.66. Grace of Power took second and Fareena placed third in the event for 2-year-old fillies.
MARYLAND MILLION STARTER
HANDICAP
Sanford Robbins’ Fire Hero claimed $50,000 for winning the one-mile race by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:39.63. Pacesetter Oorah took second with Irish Colony placing third.

I am a Marylander and Horseman, We need slots to compete with the other state's around us! Pimlico is a disgrace and not worthy of the Preakness in it's current condition. To attract a new fan base the tracks have to be rebuilt, which will be if slots are appoved. I've seen the blue prints! Maryland will be on top again. The great jockeys like Prado and Desermeaux would return, they love Maryland and want to end the careers were they started. After all, We did build Stadiums for our Football and Baseball Teams. Together they don't even employ close to what the Horse Racing Industry does. Remember we lost the Colts and are on the brink of losing our Fillies also, along with the Preakness.

Preakness Day is the economic engine that keeps the industry afloat, but how many of the folks who go to Pimlico to party in the infield ever go back for an afternoon of racing, or even pay attention to the races while they're there. Right now the Pimlico complex is seriously underutilized. The number of racing days keeps shrinking. The Maryland Jockey Club bought up dozens of decent single family homes and demolished them to make room for whatever is/was expected to develop from the slots venture. These weren't falling down rowhouses, but decent middle-class housing. Now that empty (except for one lone house) strip serves as parking for the Preakness and the occasional big event at Pimlico, but is otherwise vacant. I'd love to see more racing dates at Pimlico, with evening races so that people can go to the track without playing hookey from work.

O'Malley intends to give up to 100 million for racing purses and to breeders and another 40 million to the "Racetrack Renewal Fund." Recently MEC bought Laurel Racetrack and Pimlico, to add to their ownership of 9 other racetracks. This Canadian owned company also owns 3 tracks that are attached to casino operations. My question is; When did we get into the business of bailing out corporations that are clearly making money? If their investment was so bad do you think they would have bought both tracks for a mere 18.3 million? Now our Governor wants to "invest" 40 million more to encourage them to stay here? I understand The Preakness brings in millions in revenue to the state, but since when should we line the pockets of a Canadian firm as a payoff to make them stay here?
