Louis G. Dominguez says:
Another approach that might work is to concentrate police resources in rounding up gangs and gan members and prosecuting them for any infraction no matter how small. Cracking down on the drug sellers and gun traders is another way to get to the root of the violence. A strict curfew for juveniles may net arrests that prevent criminal activity. Sobriety checkpoints and other like checkpoints can result in multiple arrests for alcohol and drug use, but a spin-off benefit is the recovery of stolen vehicles and illegal guns. The checkpoints may also produce parole violators, people with outstanding warrants, and individuals of interest. In addition, such checkpoints all over the city, give the police high visibility that translates into deterrance. Move the checkpoints often and make it a permanent part of policing the streets. Soon, the message will get through that criminals and wrong dooers are not safe anywhere in the city. Operation "no more criminals on our streets" can be a winner.
"All Hands on Deck" and other similar police slogans to combat crime in the city are producing "O" results. The new chief must use old policing strategies and tactics to curb the chronic and galloping murder rate. The new chief needs to eliminate as many administrative positions as possible and the wearing of white shirts by the so-called command staff. She must remember that everyone on the payroll is a cop, and that includes her. So, the most direct action that she can take, is to put everybody on the street--in every throubled neighborhood. Cops must walk a particular beat and get to know the residents and all those who hang around and are connected to drugs, prostitution, guns, and other factors that have a direct connection with the violence on the streets. And these walking cops must be armed with a semi-automatic rifle to let the punks know that they are in charge. These cops may also be outfitted in fatigues or combat like uniforms, and they must be physically fit.
As another examiner reader said earlier "Our mutual and willful neglect of the District is a moral and economic sin." This looks more and more true. This city is our country's capitol. Higher murder rates, higher homeless rates, prisons overcroweded and in need, any neglect is inexcusable.
I think that the spike in homicides is due to broken families and poverty. Many of the youth that commit homicides have fathers that are in prison due to the ridiculous "war on drugs" policies. The current crime trends can be directly related to unfair and unjust sentencing guidelines that put petty drug dealers behind bars for 10 or more years. We all know that boys need father figures in their lives...even if the fathers are hustling drugs to support their families. Social service programs are the KEY. Job training programs along with parenting programs will be a part of the solution to reducing crimes and homicides in the District. Nevertheless, they are only part of the solution. Research must be conducted to determine the social factors that contribute to robberies and murders in the District.
I think that it is a result. it is a result of poor family upbringing. Just understand that if if children are not 'traditionally and culturally normed, they will grow up perverted adults. the homicde affair is the result of lack of proper parental care. i think it will continue until the perveted adults are no more. how can a morally rich someone be at ease in taking others life?
There is no "mutual and willful neglect" of the District. I pay my federal taxes, many of which end up in the District. I'm sick of people saying it's my responsibility when other people fail. DC has more money spent per student than most, if not all, other public school systems in the nation, and it's among the absolute worst. Goes to show you how great socialist ideals are. They don't mean squat if you have poor parenting. Government will NEVER EVER EVER be good at raising children, and it shouldn't be their job.
It's time for an intervention. All 50 states should gang up on the District and just tear it apart. Poor neighborhoods should simply be bulldozed to the ground. The tenants should be dispersed and not allowed to live amongst other poor people ever again. It would be far, far cheaper to send each child to a private prep school from here on out, even at $20,000 per head per year, than to continue with the current system of doing the minimum. Our leaders are always braying about how great this country is. Talking and doing are two different things. Are we great? Time to prove it for a change instead of waving flags and getting weapy-eyed over wounded soldiers on TV (a mere distraction from what is really wrong). Our mutual and willful neglect of the District is a moral and economic sin. It is a sign of who we are and what we have become. Is any one else here sick of being a nation of failures and has beens? If I hear one more story about how great we were in WW2 I will be sick.
End the over concentration of subsidized housing. These type of Projects are a breeding ground for crime, and should not be subsidized by DC taxpayers. Let the market regulate where people reside, not the city. If the city wants to help, it should offer housing assistance to families in need - but not stick them all in high rise buildings, one next to the other.
