One minute, the Ravens thought they had escaped with a victory over the Cleveland Browns thanks to an apparent missed field goal by Cleveland kicker Phil Dawson with no time left in regulation.
The next minute, they were told that Dawson’s kick hit the center support behind the crossbar before deflecting onto the field. The result was a successful 51-yard kick by Dawson and an overtime session the emotionally deflated Ravens were not ready to endure.
Fewer than six minutes later, Dawson kicked a 33-yard field goal connected and some dirt on the Ravens’ dying season to lift the Browns to a 33-30 victory in front of a stunned crowd of 71,055 at M&T Bank Stadium on a cool, autumn afternoon.
“It hurts a lot,” Ravens coach Brian Billick said.
The loss was particularly stinging since the Ravens (4-6) erased a 27-14 deficit in the fourth quarter — even taking 30-27 lead with 26 seconds remaining in the game on Matt Stover’s 47-yard field goal.
But the Browns (6-4) quickly moved down field, with passes from quarterback Derek Anderson (24 of 38 for 274 yards) to Joe Jurevicius and Braylon Edwards, before Dawson kicked the tying field goal.
Ravens players had left the field and headed toward their locker room as officials discussed the field goal, which they had originally signaled as no good. But as the officials huddled to determine if the field goal was good, several Ravens were aleady undressing in the locker room, including linebacker Ray Lewis, who according to a team official said: It’s over. We won.”
However, after officials reversed the call, the Browns were able to parlay their momentum into scoring on the first possession of overtime.
The Ravens will head to San Diego (5-5) for Sunday’s game against the Chargers having lost a franchise record-tying four straight games.
“It’s tough,” quarterback Kyle Boller, who was 22 of 41 for 279 yards, said. “I never really experienced that before.”
The Ravens saw their slim postseason aspirations become even smaller with the loss. The team’s next three games are against the San Diego Chargers, the New England Patriots and the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis.
Unlike recent weeks, the Ravens showed signs of life against the Browns. After weeks of being routed by AFC North foes Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, the Ravens appeared destined for another thumping.
The Ravens had just 38 yards in the first half with two first downs. The third quarter saw Boller throw his second interception of the day, which was returned 100 yards by Brodney Pool for a touchdown and the 27-14 lead.
But the Ravens scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, thanks to unlikely heroes like Boller, little-used receiver Devard Darling, second-year tight end Quinn Sypniewski (six catches for 53 yards) and Stover (three field goals).
Darling (four catches, 107 yards) caught two passes for 69 yards in the fourth quarter, including a 27-yard, game-tying touchdown with 3:31 remaining.
“I know a loss is a loss in the NFL and you all don’t care much hearing me talk about the character the team showed coming back in the second half, but it means something to me,” Billick said. “I hope it means something to them because they were incredible.”

T-sizzle as he likes to call himself has been more like T-fizzle. It has been well proven that Suggs only has productive seasons when he has a dominant end opposite him. When pryce went down so did suggs productivity. This also was the case when boulware went down and ultimately away.It is totally cruel that a true talent such as Kelly Gregg cant even make the pro bowl when his numbers are consistent his work effort is remarkable and most of all he never complains. Oh by the way its players like Gregg that help overrated players like Suggs even get chances to get 8.5million. He should be a man honor his contract that he's in now, because that last thing he needs is for the team to look good at his position without him.

I have suppoted boller since draft day. I believe that given the right opportunity he could do very well in the NFL. If you look at every quaterback rated highly in the league there is one thing in common, they all have a recieving threat.Baltimore hasnt had a consistent recieving threat since they let shannon sharpe go.Since boller has been here look at who he has had to throw to. Derrick mason is really a second or third option on any other playoff team.He had Travis taylor as first option,Mark clayton cant get seperation, heap cant stay on the field. Oh,bye the way both times Heap went to the pro bowl Boller was the starter and the two years Mason has eclipsed 1000 yds Boller was the QB. In closing: Give the guy three things, protection, recievers, and real support...because we are the only fans that cheered when he got hurt.

yes i agree with this post.....it makes a lot of sense....for the salary diffrence. their production hasn't been that far apart....Dawan tied or led the leauge in interceptions by a rokie....no doubt dawan is less talented everyone knows that, but football isn't all about talent laron was criticized for going for the big hit too much, and not going for the ball..while laron landry is by far the more athletic one..but dawan might be the smartest..he works with wat he's got..he isn't the fastest, but he makes plays..and he is rearly out of position. he's also great in the box as well....dawan is a beast and very underrated, i expect big things from him this year.

Congrats Ron Snyder on what is one of the dumbest pieces of writing i have seen this offseason. To even compare the two Landry's is sheer stupidity. Dawan will even tell you himself his brother is more talented. You act as though Laron is a malcontent. As for your assertation that the Ravens have gotten more out of their Landry? Did you miss the playoff game Laron had with the two INT's or all the knockout hits he had on recievers last year? Your article is garbage.

The Receiving problem... said:
The problem with the receivers is that they have no red zone target. They got rid of Randy Hymes, who caught EVERYTHING thrown his way. I mean... just think what he could do if he has someone besides Boller throwing to him. So without Hymes... they have to count on Heap to stay healthy when they're in the red zone. You can get by with smaller receivers, but you have to score from further out. That means running passing plays longer than 5 yards. With Billick and Boller... we were never going to get that. So, hopefully this new offense and Troy Smith playing will show everyone just how right I am. I could hope for them to sign Randy Hymes also... but I know that's not happening.

Dennis Schehl - know your facts. Lewis was never believed to be directly involved in the stabbings. The only thing he did was lie to protect a friend. No matter what you think of the guy at least get it right. He is still one of the best linebackers to ever play the game. Even if he has lost a step...his influence can not be replaced. Know the game before you comment. Jab - that's a pretty stupid comment. Wasn't it Lewis that lead them to a Super Bowl victory? Wasn't it Lewis that won the MVP for that game? While I do not partcularly care for the Ravens, I am an avid football fan. I will say, getting a new coach- thumbs up! Ray Lewis EXEMPLEFIES (sp?) leadership- if not playing football he could easily be a youth coach (we need ppl like him there), a motivational speaker, preacher, whatever. You can tell he is genuine with his talks (did you hear him on ESPN this sunday) and I think he is the heart of his team, his teammates obviously look to him for guidance, as do the coaching staff. While I do not personally think Ray Lewis has much football left in him, he does have a great deal of heart left in him, and I know he will use that for good of the community- he does that now too!

Mr Biscotti made a good choice with input from Cass and Ozzie and gave John Harbaugh strong support as he was introduced yesterday. He does't do Caoch Harbaugh any favors by constantly making sure everyone knows Ray Lewis is "the great leader" on the team.Part of the problem with the Ravens as a team is that it is clear Lewis, Ogden and several others have "priviledges status on the team. Look north Mr Biscotti, "teams" win with great players who do what it takes for the team to win. Too many hotdogs on a team have lousy seasons.
