Carbon footprint inventory on San Carlos’ agenda

San Carlos, Calif. (Map, News) - San Carlos is trying to reduce its carbon footprint by launching a greenhouse gas emission inventory it hopes will inspire residents to do the same.

The inventory would check for environmental aspects upon which the city could improve, Assistant City Manager Brian Moura said. It will include everything from energy used by stoplights to wastewater treatment to employees’ commutes.

The city, which has a police chief who drives a hybrid truck and a mayor who rides an electric scooter, established a green initiative and climate change programs in May, Moura said.

The city could spend $5,000 for the inventory, down from an estimated $20,000 because of its partnership with the Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. The network needs 20 agencies to participate to get the discount, said Vice President-COO Seth Fearey.

After the inventory, the city will look into greening up their city by possibly adding hybrid and plug-in vehicles, among other things, Moura said.
