Steinmetz: Five reasons for five losses

Forward Al Harrington is one of a handful of Warriors who need to become better free-throw shooters if they want to get better this season.

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - The Warriors have begun the year with five straight losses. Here are five reasons why:

» Chemistry lesson: During their March-April run last season, the Warriors had a team full of players with defined roles. This season, who is doing what is anybody’s guess. The trade of Jason Richardson and the seven-game suspension of Stephen Jackson have taken their toll on the rotation.

Mickael Pietrus was the team’s starting power forward on opening night; Al Harrington began the season on the bench and is now starting; Monta Ellis started and is now coming off the bench; Kelenna Azubuike is a heavy-minute player who was in the D-League a year ago; Baron Davis is playing too many minutes.

The hope is that when Jackson returns, his teammates will slip back into more comfortable roles.

» Passion AWOL: There’s no way around it. A significant factor in the Warriors’ success from a year ago was their emotion. The Warriors thrived from some kind of inner fire that has yet to be recaptured.

Matt Barnes was a leader in this regard, but his slow start has tempered his enthusiasm. Baron Davis has done what he can, but it’s obvious that the Warriors are missing Jackson from an emotional standpoint.

» Free-throw woes: The Warriors are shooting 67 percent from the foul line so far this season. The good news is that they will get better from the line. The bad news is ... not by much.

Warriors fans need to face facts: Their team, as currently constructed, is not going to be a good foul-shooting team. Davis shot 74.5 percent from the line last season, but is at 68 percent for his career.

Pietrus, Harrington and Andris Biedrins are all below-average foul shooters. That’s not going to change overnight.

» The lost long ball: The Warriors are shooting 34 percent from 3-point range, not far off last season’s percentage.

The problem, however, is the Warriors haven’t hit any big 3s this season. They’re still shooting them, but they have yet to overwhelm an opponent with a barrage of them like they did at times last season.

Whether they need a 3-pointer to continue a run, take the lead or stop an opposing run, meaningful 3s haven’t been there this season.

» Perimeter problems: There may be some out there wondering why rebounding — or lack of it — didn’t make this list. Well, because while rebounding has been an issue, it hasn’t been the killer.

The real culprit is the Warriors are defending poorly on the perimeter, allowing guards to get into the lane with penetration.

By not keeping opponents out of the lane, it forces the Warriors’ big men to step up and help, which takes them out of rebounding position. Any time Biedrins is away from the basket area because he has to help defensively, the Warriors are in trouble on the glass.

No, the Warriors aren’t ever going to be a good rebounding team. But they will be better when defense on the perimeter improves.

Yo Steiny thanks as always for real basketball insight. Its nice to read somebody who not only loves the game, but also understands how it is played. It may not matter to the casual fan, but we junkies know the difference. What do i want to say_ With The Braided One going down with the hip injury, and are impending need of a backup point guard.... I want to know why we have not already put EARL BOYKINS ( sitting Free Agent ) on the list of potential additions. He fits are style, a bona fide shooter who can get his own shot or distribute, and he actually was a good perimeter defender and sometimes even in the post due to his trickery. Plus the fans love him. He might cost more than 'veterans minimum' like Hudson, but he is generally healthy and will outplay him for sure! Can we not spend a measly $3 million a year on a quality backup? Looking forward to some of your insight Go Warriors Diddy Bob SF

Nellie is playing his veterans a little too much, hurting the development of the young guys, like Bellini and Wright. Too many brick treys have cost them some games, which is why they have got to turn Bellini loose. We need a deadly accurate three point shooter.

Make Baron Davis earn the money. We should make Davis earn his next contract the old fashioned way ..... make him earn it ! Make him prove that he is worth $ 17 million a year. Remember very few teams will have the 15 million cap room to sign him, and with his reputation, who will take the chance, especially if he dumps the Warriors next year. It will be just one more count against him. In addition, I am convinced that Davis is doing some kind of performance enhancement drug. Probably half the league is doing it too. Probably amphetamines. Notice how everytime a game is on nationwide network T.V., how his performance improves. The guy is a showman. That is o.k. with me, but let him do it for a whole season..... and without getting burnt out on the very drug he is doing, like that last 2 playoff games with Utah, after having totally dominated in the game before. In that one home game he looked liked a superstar with the dunk on Kerilinko. But, then looked what happened next.

i say make Baron play the year tough and DO NOT SIGN him to an extension. Baron will have to play well to get the kind of money he is asking for from any team next year. If He breaks down during the season - his shell game is over. If he produces we can offer him a new contract and if he say it is too late - let him move to some other city like Minnersota or Atlanta and see how he likes it there so far from his west coast roots. I see Baron worth about $10 million a year at his current health until he proves he is capable of long minutes the entire season. I just dont appreciate or support basic greed from a guy whose career was on the rocks when he arrived two years ago.... and really only turned it around the last 20 games of the year last year!!!!! The Warriors should just go ahead and do the sign-and-trade with the Heat. The Heat are offering Jason Williams(exp. contract) and Michael Doleac(1yr left on his contract vet. min. Why keep a player on your team who doesn't want to be there, especially when you're gaining more than you're giving up?

I am in total agreement with the sentiment eminating (is that a word?) from Mr. Matt S. I have been in kind of a bummer mood about the W's ever since they traded J Rich. I'm still waiting for the move that follows that makes the trade make sense. It's like, we went to the 'offs finally and now we're rebuilding already? Getting rid of proven pieces for young unprovens? Bottom line: the roster has not improved from last year, it's been degraded. Line beneath bottom line: What gives, bro? Last line, I promise: I hope I'm wrong and we go to the 'offs again. Just making it again will be enough to satisfy me (don't read that, Cohen or Mully).

With all due respect I disagree. You are taking a position then that Monte and Andres had career years last year. Thi si why the Warriors will win 50 games this year. 1) Monte and Andres are better than last year. One more years worth of experience is huge and they will feel like they belong. 2) We will have Jackson and Harrington for a full 80 games. 3) Last year JRich was injured most of the year so losing him will have very little effect on our record. With the addition of Bellinelli we will have replaced those points. 4) Brandon Wright and Lasme will prove to be what we were lacking inside. Not in a huge numbers way but in those hustle and rebounding blocking way. 5) One mor eyear running Nellies runa nd gun system. We learned how to play frnatic defense and helter skelter offense during the playoffs and very little of that had to dfo with JRich. 6) We are simply better prepared to win 50 games with this team.

How many years G.S. got nellie ball? 1 at the most. so win that ring this year with 2 rookies. haha. we lost 4 straight in the finals. at least we got to the finals. ya'll didn't even get past utah, who at best was the 5th best team in the conference. see u guys in the lottery next year!! peace

Warriors would love to have him, but who is he to think that he can CHOOSE which team he plays for? He hasn't proven anything in the league, and yet he's being picky about what teams he would play for. ( I know it's a more complicated situation with the government and marketing issue). What about a PG? We need one. Baron needs one. Monta and Harrington still got trade values. and ZIGZAG, who care if the MAVS are good? U guys dont even have a RING!!!! 1974 Warriors got one. Please, dont u think there is a problem when ur up 2-0 against the Heat, and lose 4 straight? I think its bit of a choking factor too, or Cuban is just cursed. Get rid of Cuban, then hopefully another 65+ win season wont go down the drain.

Big deal. they couldn't beat the jazz: 5 games!! c'mon get real. rockets took jazz to 7 games!! u telling me warriors could beat rockets, suns, spurs?? spurs would sweep warriors, and the others would win in 5 games. don't get me wrong warriors beat the mavs, but that will be the peak of every1 on that team. they will 4ever be known as the 1 round darlings. think back and remember when d-wade was a rookie and he was schooling baron. that hornets team was better than this warrior team. so when nellie quits and y'all bring in another college coach, tell will u still believe?? mavs will still be 1 of da top teams for YEARS to come while the warriors will be in

What is Posey going to do for the Warriors? Yes he can play defense, but the Warriors are not a defensive team! We would not have hired Nelson if we wanted defense. KG and Kobe will not help either because B-Diddy is our playmaker and he needs to command the ball 70% of the time. Instead of breaking the team-chemistry with KG or Kobe, why not pursue Marion? Marion would be a better fit in our offense, and he comes at a cheaper price (perhaps Ellis and Wright and 2nd round pick). Team chemistry is by far the most important aspect in this game. Bdiddy, Belinelli, Jackson, Marion, Biedrins.

Warriors finished the season topping the mavs, a certain indication that the team came together. My concern is why break something that has worked? Davis, Jrich, Jackson, Harrington, Biedrins with Ellis, Pietrrus and Barnes were enough to finish the season 16-5 and a playoff series win over the mavs. Team chemistry was amazing. KG isn't the answer. Role players along with team chemistry is just as important in winning a championship (i.e SPURS). Re-sign Barnes, develop Belinelli (best player in 2007 draft) and Wright, and Azubuike looks solid off the bench. Warriors, if anything, need a back-up point for Davis since Ellis is not a pure PG. Minnesota couldn't get it done with KG for the past 12 seasons, and Kobe is a cancer on any team. We do not need them. J-rich will be missed, however, we still have our core in Bdiddy.

I believe we need to make the whole Garnett fantasy a reality. Like others have said previously, U need 2 stars to make it in this league and Baron and Kevin will give us that. Baron , Jackson, Harrington, Garnett and Biedrins is a great starting lineup. Monta Ellis is a fun and energetic player, but he isnt a true point guard and he isnt a good enough shooter to play shooting guard. He will never be an all star. So we need to move him now while the other teams attraction is peaked. Bellinellie will be great coming off the bench if not starting by the end of the season, Azabuke would be nice to bring back along with Barnes if at all possible. Garnett will give the warriors the post pressence and rebounding ablility that kept us from the western conference finals last year. This needs to happen if you want to warrant the J-Rich trade, otherwise that trade was a disaster.

If Steinmetz is actually watching the playoffs this year, he would know that the officials are not rewarding flopping. Particularly in the Spurs/Utah series; both DFish and Deron are notorious for diving under guards trying to get calls and we saw them both crying to the officials all series. The officials have made it a point of focus to not reward flopping this post-season and while they haven't been altogether consistent, it is very much something they are trying to do. So, look for Varejao to be back on the bench quickly due to foul trouble. Steinmetz is a fool for thinking the officials are going to put both Duncan and James on the bench. What NBA fan would want to watch that product?

Stieinmetz's article IS a FLOP! I realize he's too busy covering the Warriors to watch the Spurs regularly, but he's flat our wrong about Bruce and the flopping. If anyone on the Spurs is most guilty of flopping, it's Manu and Jacque Vaughn - they covet flopping and I'm a die hard Spurs fan. Bruce has been honored 4 consecutive years to the NBA All Defensive 1st team and that honor comes from coaches, not players or fans. Hes' been in the league 10 years. Bruce plays real defense and gets most of his fouls from reaching in after having been beat off the dribble. Bruce rarely takes charges and rarely has to get up off the floor during a game from trying to do so. Varejao is a measily second year player whose name people can't even pronouce and is a well documented flopper because he can't play man-on-ball defensive or move his feet. How many all defensive teams has he been voted on to? Flopping isn't at all new. Dennis Rodman invented it as Piston and perfected it as a Bull.

For the longest time I have been hoping we would draft a PG. I think we should have traded for either Marcus Williams or Rodriguez, In the past we also passed on the likes of Leandro Barboza, Tony Parker, Steve Nash. Let O'bryant develop. He was only a rookie and a sophmore coming out of college and people expect him to be just dominanat even at the DLeague. But people seem to forget most bigmen take 3-5 years to develop. Case in point look at Diop in Dallas. Lastly I would hate to mess with the chemstry that developed. We clearly haven't seen that since the 50 win Webber season before trading Owens and just igniting the Warrior's down fall. I think the answer is making a deal for KG. We package Harrington and Monte for him. Harrington would be redundant with KG. Monte has proved to be a SG in a PG body and lacks the PG skills to give Davis a rest and keep the offensive flow going. Realistically we have to trade value to get value. The core guys just need to be onboard.

The Warriors are going to try all Summer to trade for Garnett. The only problem is that so are the Lakers. It is going to come down to which main component of the trade Minnesota is more interested in... Do they want Odom or Richardson? Beyond that the only way the Warriors are going to be able to sweeten the pot and distinguish their offer from the Laker's is to include Ellis. If you ask me, I'd say they'd be crazy not to include Ellis and then draft for their future PG at #18. Unfortunately, they may also have to include Harrington with either Ellis or Richardson to make the deal with Minnesota. Meaning they will give up two starters for a Superstar and spare parts. The good news would be teaming Garnett with Baron, Jackson & Biedrins which would provide a core that could be competing for a Title the next 3 to 4 years!! Go for it Mully!!

The rest of what you said had nothing to do with "how the warriors can get even better." That was a waste of my time. Anyone who knows a little about basketball could have written that.

I cant believe that Jason Terry is not being suspended for what he did to Baron Davis. He was out of a game last year for punching a Maimi Heat player in the groin. The media is very quick to talk about Stephen Jackson, but Jason Terry is building a reputation for being a very "sneaky dirty" player
