SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom today proclaimed a state of local emergency as a result of the 58,000-gallon oil spill caused by the container ship that knocked into a tower of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge last week.

Newsom cited the possible conditions of "extreme peril" to local residents that have arisen since the spill as a cause for the proclamation.

The proclamation will remain in effect until it is terminated by either Newsom or the Board of Supervisors.

What use was pilot John Cota? Wasn't it his job to prevent such mishaps? I would hope he has been suspended until further investigations conclude.
