Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) fell more than 5.5 percent in midday trading, the largest drop seen among local stocks tracked by the Examiner. Intuit Inc. (INTU) also feel more than 2.4 percent.

On the positive side, Palo Alto-based VMWare Inc. (VMW) jumped more than 11 percent, while Cupertino-based Apple Inc. (AAPL) rose more than 9 percent.

The markets were up overall, with the Dow Jones climbing more than 1.8 percent, the Nasdaq more than 2.3 percent and the S&P 500 more than 1.9 percent.

Local companies in the news included VMWare, which updated a free trial version of its virtualization software, according to Reuters. Intuit Inc. is expected to announce its results on Thursday, with analysts and the company forecasting a loss, according to Forbes.com.
