SAN MATEO, Calif. (Map, News) - Morning commuters were slowed Monday after a garbage truck struck the Caltrain overcrossing at Monte Diablo Avenue in San Mateo, causing 15- to 40-minute delays for several hours.

Although the tracks were not damaged, Caltrain spokesman Jonah Weinberg said a maintenance worker was called out to make sure the area was safe for trains after the crash just before 8 a.m. No trains were cancelled, but traffic moved slowly across the Monte Diablo crossing until after noon, with the longest delays at 40 minutes.

“When something impacts your tracks like that, you need to make sure that there is no damage that could cause damage to the train or the people on board,” Weinberg said.

The Allied Waste truck driver was not seriously injured but was transported to a local hospital.
