Leaders produced the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, specifically designed to quench abuse within the Catholic Church.
Yesterday the USCCB continued their general meeting to address issues such as the sexual abuse of children within the church.
“We are taking measures to make sure this never happens again,” Bishop Gregory Aymond said in a brief statement during Monday’s committee meeting at the Marriott Waterfront.
“What the Catholic Church did caught up to them,” Karen Terry , a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said during the presentation.
Outside the hotel, protesters peacefully walked about with signs denouncing the Catholic Church’s lethargic response to child abuse and the alleged scandal surrounding Church hierarchy.

5:27: I'm sorry, not, but I have to say that I agree with the comments made by V2C. The beginning of resolving any problem is first to identify the problem, and yes that means stating (naming) the problem like it is no matter how painful the words seem to sound. Especially a problem of this nature and magnitude which by the way is "killing the spirit and hearts" of our children before they have a chance to live. I personally think that the "bastards" who commit these macabre crimes against our children in the name of God should be put to death, legally. The Catholic Bishops are insane and think a lot like most Americans, sweep the problem under the rug and it will go away. Well no it won't go away and just to let you know God has a special place in hell for those "reprobates." Read your bible and see that God does not feel that this atrocious sin against the innocent, which, cannot help themselves against these predators, should be given mercy without repentance.

Just curious... but what does the quote of 7:37 PM have to do with the article above?

The taking of innocent human life (abortion) has always been condemned by the Catholic church and is a Catholic priority because of the absolute innocence of the victim. It is never optional. Obviously, Catholics abort just like everyone else but the church has always instructed us that it is wrong to kill the per-born. Unjust war is always condemned and the question of justification is constantly debated by the bishops. Are there innocent victims in every war? Absolutely! Catholics are as divided about the war in Iraq as other citizens. The war issue has opponents and proponents among Catholics. In a nutshell practicing Catholics may have abortions but the Catholic church continues to remind us that the taking of innocent life is not debatable.

So bombing Iraq is fine, but supporting abortion is a sin. Glad we have our priorities straight.

"One report mandated by Congress estimated that as many as 4.5 million students, out of roughly 50 million in American schools, are subject to sexual misconduct by an employee of a [public] school sometime between kindergarten and 12th grade. That figure includes verbal harassment that's sexual in nature." Associated Press- Oct 20, 2007. The difference between the horrors that were committed by some priest and the horrors that are being committed by teachers in the public schools is that the Church is doing something about it.

What the Catholic Church did and did not do finally caught up with them in 2002. It is especially chilling that a cardinal archbishop who knowingly kept a convicted sexual predator priest in ministry for months before removing him has now been elelected to as president of the USCCB. The sexual abuse of our children is an epidemic going on in our country, a pandemic if one considers it in its worldwide proportions. So it is hard to believe, in light of the statement above, that we continue to have bishops like Cardinal Francis George who actually opposes the removal of statutes of limitation regarding the sexual abuse of our children. I have talked with hundreds of individuals who have suffered sexual abuse as children. Appallingly, most have suffered at the hands or predator priests. An yet we have Cardinal George who further abuses victims by slandering them and questioning their motives in seeking justice through lawsuits. Such slander is truly dispicable.

I have met their husbands and wives. To attack so viciously, the members of our own church who have suffered so much at the hands of their abusers, priests, is truly scandalous.
