Many of us will hit the roads to spend time with friends and family on Thanksgiving.

I’m sure the motoring association will predict a record number of drivers — because that’s what it says every time.

Even if that is not totally accurate, enough cars and trucks are expected on the roads to make trips a challenge.

But you still have a little time.

Temperatures are dipping into the 30s, so you should get your vehicle’s vitals checked out.

Get an oil change if you haven’t recently and check the coolant level and effectiveness.

This is especially important if you are heading north or toward the Great Lakes, where it could be much cooler.

Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper pressure level and have good tread. Also, make sure your spare is in good shape, and that the jack and all its components are included and in working order.

Put together an emergency kit to stay in your trunk or other storage area through the winter.

That kit should include: A bag of rock salt; half dozen or so flares; blanket; gallon of drinking water and some energy bars; box of matches or a lighter; and cat box filler for traction.

Wiper blades are often overlooked. It doesn’t cost much to replace them.

Road work at airport

If you are heading to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport this week, be aware that the inbound ramp from Route 170/Aviation Boulevard to Interstate 195 as well as the right lane along I-195 will be closed.

Drivers using Route 170 will need to use Elm Road to reach the airport terminal and hourly parking garage.

Crews will be repaving in that area and are expected to complete the work by Thursday.

New Web source for transit users

If you use public transportation on a regular basis, the Web site publicroutes.com touts itself as the first international directions-based Web resource for public transportation.

It appears to have some potential, but I’m interested in getting your reactions to it.
