SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - With the outcome of this year’s municipal election mostly a fait accompli, San Francisco’s political factions are already preparing for November 2008, an expected battle for control of the Board of Supervisors.
“Everybody’s talking about next year already,” political analyst David Latterman said. “It will shape The City for the next six to eight years.”
Four supervisors will term out of office next year: Jake McGoldrick in District 1, Aaron Peskin in District 3, Tom Ammiano in District 9 and Gerardo Sandoval in District 11. The four city legislators were all voted into office in 2000 in a progressive sweep seen as a backlash to the backroom politics of former Mayor Willie Brown. Another supervisor, Sean Elsbernd, is up for re-election.
San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Vice President Jim Lazarus said anti-Brown sentiment helped elect progressives — even in moderate districts.
“There’s some opportunity, next year, to elect, by San Francisco standards, a few more moderate supervisors,” he said.
More moderate supervisors, it is surmised, will consistently back Mayor Gavin Newsom, who frequently battles with the board, and sometimes loses when an 8-3 progressive supermajority passes veto-proof legislation.
Wade Randlett, president of SFSOS, a group focused on “quality of life” issues such as crime and public schools, said they’ll be working to elect supervisors that are more moderate than Newsom.
“They’ll be doing it to tackle the issues he hasn’t already tackled,” Randlett said. “Real moderates that are not waiting for the mayor’s lead.”
Ten candidates have already filed paperwork with the Department of Elections to run for a supervisor’s seat next November, including Eric Mar and Mark Sanchez, both educators on San Francisco’s school board; attorney Claudine Cheng, chair of the Treasure Island Development Authority; John Avalos, legislative aide for Supervisor Chris Daly; and Eric Quezada, the executive director of a San Francisco homeless services nonprofit.
Daly said that while Newsom may enjoy the big-dollar financial support of downtown business interests that allow him to dominate a citywide contest, supervisorial district elections allow neighborhoods to vote for more left-leaning candidates.
“I think progressives are strongly situated,” Daly said. “You’ll see a stronger and more progressive majority after next year’s elections.”

Question for "Chris Daly gets the job done" So please list what you believe were the top 3 items that the D6 Supervisor accomplished together with the extent of benefit for a) his district AS A WHOLE and, b) the greater good of the City.

Chris Daly is known to have a strong personality, in that way he has cared less about being like a politician, but in terms of leadership and know how to craft a budget - I don't think you'd find too many of his colleges complaining. We need to more away form focusing so much on personality and look at work quality and leadership.

So next year's candidate in District 6 is "John Avalos, legislative aide for Supervisor Chris Daly." Heaven help us who live in District 6 and work in SF. Avalos is cut from the same cloth as Daly, and here is an example of that cloth...I saw Daly literally turn his back to a Philipino lady who lives in my SOMA neighborhood when we had a block party 4 years ago. Why was this? She asked him a question about his religious upbringing. Believe me that was an "out there question" but the very least he could have done was say politely that he was raised "whatever", and then let it drop at that. I have never in my life seen such a "move" from anyone let alone an elected official. Karma...it will surely come around in District 6. Even those who want to plant trees and keep the druggies out of where SOMA kids are living and playing will get their day.

If you are speaking to me Examiner Reader 11:56 am, Supervisor Daly is not my hero, doesn't even represent my district. I no more agree with Supervisor Daly's motion than i do Supervisor Alioto-Pier's motion, or any such "censoring" motions. In fact, I do agree with some of Supervisor Alioto-Pier's well-reasoned legistlation. Politics is a rough and tumble sport, politicians apparently misbehave (i.e. Mayor Newsom/Supervisor Jew), and the discourse can, unfortunately, sometimes lose its civil tone. We are talking about politicians who are not often short on posturing and rhetoric and while we might wish it, i don't beleiove the term "adult" can necessarily be associated with their behaviors.

the only reason an idiot like Daly is on the Board of Stupes is district elections. Daly would never be elected in a City Wide vote because he only represents those who agree with his far left agenda

To Examiner Reader who wrote: Alioto-Pier is a grown up? She is more mature than your "hero" - Supervisor Chris Daly who introduced a "Code of Conduct" first. His proposal specifically targeted the mayor and other members of the board.

I believe our next board should vote to make any elected mayor to the chair position with the first order of business to hire a professional city manager to run the city. We don't need the mayor telling us how great he has done one week before the election (using his data)and then two days after the election that he is "shaking things up", to see that the pol heads are not managers.

Alioto-Pier is a grown up? Let's see, Supervisor Alioto-Pier has come up with a "Motion to Censure" and a "Code of Conduct" for the Board of Supervisors. Is this 3rd grade and Supervisor Alioto-Pier is the hall monitor? Thankfully, neither one was endorsed by the majority of her colleagues. Perhaps there's a message here for Supervior Alioto-Pier? Like stop trying to legislate Board behavior and stick to issues plagueing S.F., and we have plenty.

The residents in San Francisco continually complain about the vagrancy and panhandling problems in this city, complain about the run down condition of their streets and parks and then keep electing the same progressive pinheads who craft a $6 billion dollar budget but can’t maintain basic services and implement policies that degrade the quality of life in San Francisco. You’re either part of the problem or part of the solution. If the voters in San Francisco next year don’t take advantage of the opportunity to elect some adults to the Board of Supervisors then they have nobody but themselves to blame for problems in their city.

Next year pay close attention to who does or does not endorse each candidate. We can really make some changes on the BOS if we are cautious and vote wisely.
