SAN MATEO, Calif. (Map, News) - Both incumbents in the San Mateo City Council race won their seats back, beating their three challengers by considerable margins in the five-person race.

Current Mayor Jack Matthews, 61, and nine-year Councilmember John Lee, 76, will each get another four years. During this term, the two plan to continue tackling issues such as the increasing traffic congestion in San Mateo and the continued redevelopment of the historic Bay Meadows Race Course into 750,000 square feet of commercial space, 100,000 square feet of retail and 1,067 housing units.

Matthews is almost finished with his first term on the dais, and another four years could give Lee a chance to serve as San Mateo’s mayor for the third time.

Matthews and Lee beat former Planning Commissioner Bertha Sanchez, who came in third, land-use lawyer Anne Arnold, who was fourth, and local contractor Pete Tyo, who finished last.
