REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Map, News) - City Council incumbents made a clean sweep at the polls Tuesday, all four winning re-election to their seats on the seven-member council.
Among the contenders were incumbent winners Barbara Pierce, Rosanne Foust, Ian Bain and Alicia Aguirre, as well as challengers Kevin Bondonno and Joneen Nielsen. Bondonno served as chairman of the city’s Housing and Human Services Committee, while Nielsen, a high school teacher, campaigned little and entered the race primarily to oppose artificial turf in Redwood Shores.
“So far, so good,” Bain said at fellow Councilmember Jim Hartnett’s office, where all four incumbents gathered to watch the returns come in. “I don’t think there will be any surprises — I expect all four of us will be back, and I’m very excited to be working with them for four more years.”
All six candidates ran clean races with no infighting or mudslinging. When it came to fundraising, Aguirre and Foust received the most contributions — roughly $25,000 apiece as of late October.
In the coming year, the City Council will have a full plate of projects to consider, including the potential development of 1,433 acres of waterfront property owned by Cargill Salt; a mixed-use project of townhouses; a school and open space in Redwood Shores; and a proposal with townhouses, retail and a hotel at Peninsula Marina near Pete’s Harbor. It will also work to bring businesses and new housing projects downtown.
