School shows ‘music can be brain food’

San Bruno, Calif. (Map, News) - In a time when the arts are often the first to go in budget crises, core academic curricula and artistic endeavors are being combined in the San Bruno Park School District.
U.S. Rep Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo/San Francisco, makes a local stop Nov. 19 at Decima M. Allen Elementary School to learn more about the academic music program at the district, making what district board trustee Russ Hanley said was the district’s first personal visit from the longtime representative.
The academic music program is in its second year and was piloted at Allen Elementary last year in the primary grades, according to Superintendent David Hutt.
Academic music incorporates math into music, with the object of improving mathematical comprehension with music appreciation and music theory.
With Lantos’ help, the district is considering federal funding to keep the program going for years to come, which Hanley said would be a welcome option.
“Music has long been known to nourish the soul, but the evidence continues to mount that music can be brain food, too,” Lantos said Monday. “The benefits of the program at the Allen School are heartening for all who hope to improve results in math and reading in our public education system.”
