WASHINGTON (Map, News) - There were noticeably fewer taxis on the downtown streets of Washington on Wednesday between 5 and 10 p.m. I guess the cab drivers managed to get more than a few of their brothers and sisters to participate in their strike.
But I have to wonder to what end?
Yes, the strike was to show cabbies’ displeasure with Mayor Adrian Fenty’s decision to do away with the zone system in favor of time and distance meters, but isn’t it a little late?
Didn’t these drivers and their companies already let it be known that they didn’t like the idea? Is there some hidden threat that these drivers are going to quit their jobs once meters are in the cabs?
This strike seems to show that there is some solidarity on the part of cab drivers in the District, but the action has been taken, and the mayor is not likely to suddenly change his mind because several hundred cabs took the night off. He’s not Tony Williams.
Maybe next time, when the City Council votes to demand cabs to be clean and in good repair and that drivers actually know where they are going, these drivers can stand on a street corner and hold their breath or threaten not to eat dinner.
SoberRide again a success
Despite the cab strike, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) reports that 280 people took advantage of its SoberRide program of free cab rides home for those who had too much to drink on Halloween. Further, it says that half of those rides were given within the District.
That means that almost 300 people who shouldn’t have been behind the wheel driving weren’t and that many potential wrecks were thwarted.
Congratulations and thank you to WRAP President Kurt Erickson, all the volunteers and all the sponsors, and especially to the cab drivers who worked as part of this program, for making our streets safer.
Planned Metro hikes are taxes
Howard wrote in with a great take on the mess involving the District’s desire to let suburban transit riders pay the lion’s share of the fare and fee increases:.
“Being a commuter who travels in from Shady Grove to D.C., I see the outrageous 20+% fare hikes for riders such as me as a de facto commuter tax.
“I think the Metro representatives from D.C. have been instructed by D.C. government officials to refuse any fare hike plan that has any fair hike for bus riders because they (D.C. officials and Metro Board members) know bus riders reside primarily in the District.”
Howard has nailed it.
This is the latest attempt by the District to install a commuter tax. I just wish I had thought of it earlier.

Steve: An example of why people do not want to pay more to Metro. About 4:50 PM today I wanted to get on the Metro at the Smithsonian Station, Independence Avenue Side. I was on the side of the Street the elevator was on, so I pressed the elevator button to get to the trains. In response I heard loud unintelligible, gibberish come over the intercom from a female voice. After saying "what?" a couple of times, a loud male voice came on telling me "that I was causing a lot of problems" by "pressing the wrong elevator button". I said I was trying to take the evalator to the Metro. No response from the Metro employee.

Martin Luther King Blvd is the worse - a major thoroughfare that is a nightmare of poorly timed lights. In many cases the light turns green as you see the next blocks light turn yellow. ARRGGGH! Also left turn arrows when nobody is waiting for them, ditto for many of the cross streets. Meanwhile it's possible to travel on St. Paul and most of Monroe St. w/out hitting a single (or very few) red lights. Obviously something is amiss.

Mr. Eldridge The Wilson construction is not complete. On both sides of the bridge the 4 lanes are reduced to 3 and they curve on a temporary road to access the completed portion of the bridge. There are access ramps and bridges still under construction. A quick visit to the Wilson Bridge web site should clear up your ignorance on this. Thanks. Frustrated Comuter

The Metro radio I would like to have would consist of an antenna running through the tunnels, so that people could pick up FM radio broadcasts from their favorite stations. This system could be useful in case of an emergency. Radio announcements would likely be more intelligible than anything the Metro sound system could produce.

Riders who are not imposing those costs on the system shouldn't have to pay for them. Question: while riding the Orange line I notice that when the train leaves the underground from Ballston enroute to East Falls Church it slows to a crawl everyday. What's going on there? Is it a safety issue or is something else at work? Comment: It appears to me that Metrorail drivers are often spending much time/concentration on annoucing the details of an upcoming stop. And some drivers are better than others about making clear and correct annoucements. Plus this procedure probably distracts drivers enough to make it a safety concern - remember the deaths of people hit by trains? Why doesn't Metro use an automated stop announcement system like that used in London? Uniformity and safety should be the goal at Metro, no?

Cyclists should use common sense in deciding whether or not to ride on a sidewalk. If there are pedestrians present - especially seniors, people carrying packages and children - be coureous and get off your bike and walk it on the sidewalk. If not, then yes - you ought to be able to ride your bike SLOWLY on the sidewalk. If people still cannot do that, then just ban bike riding on the sidewalk. Right now, it is not illegal.

Aren't escalators for pedestrians - and shouldn't Elevators be used to transport large items like suitcases or backpacks with wheel instead of escalators. Many a time during rush hour have I practically tripped over a large suitcase with wheels -- last week a guy had the nerve to take down a cello in a case with wheels down the metro center escalator during evening rush hour. Anyone with sense would use the elevator for that . Metro should do a better job of promoting the elevators for transporting large items and not the escalator during rush hour.

Why are handicapped excluded in express lanes? At times emergencies are imminent. Diabetics? I am an amputee and my leg cuts off circulation if in car too long, and can't stretch it. Heart patients and so on. We can't get on express lanes but motorcycles can. Makes sense to me. J. Abney

Do away with all tolls in Maryland. This will reduce air pollution, road rage, and gas consumption. Increase the gas tax to cover the lost revenue. Put in on the ballot for the next election. (To see if we want to keep the tolls off).
