examiNation DC: What do you think about Harris Teeter wanting to sell alcohol from their store in Adams Morgan?

This is the problem now - if Harris Teeter was in a predominantly white neighborhood, there would be no mentioning of alcohol!

i work in harris tetter on pentagon row and I would love to get transferred so if anyone can give me the hook up...

get a brain nay sayers... you can buy alcohol all over this neighborhood... is it somehow insensible to sell it at a nice grocery store versus in the two or three corner stores already within the block? i don't drink, but if i did, i'd rather have my beer and broccoli in one bag. what the hell?!?

Seriously "examiner" give us some facts. What is this zoning restriction? Where does it apply? Why was it in place? My guess, it was implemented in 1920 to keep the 18th St. bar owners happy and encourage locals to come to the bars. Since you can't even squeeze in the door at most of these bars on a Thursday - Saturday night, I don't think the neighborhood has any legitimate or illegitimate concern. Honestly, did a signal home owner or resident move to the area based on this ridiculous restriction? Who is the "resident" complaining about the alcohol sales? My guess, the liquor store owner on Columbia road. Let those who want to be protected from alcohol move to a dry county in the middle of nowhere Tennessee. We won't miss the six of you in Adams Morgan and I will be able to buy some beer with my lettuce - like it should be.

Just because alcohol is the only legal mind altering addictive drug (and why is that?) doesn't mean it should be promoted and sold in a grocery store. Half of all violent crime and murders, one third of all child abuse, one third of all suicides and half of all traffic deaths are alcohol related. Alcohol causes cancer (breast, colon, mouth, esophagus, pharynx, liver and pancreas), stroke and heart attacks, diabetes, prostate disease, pancreatitis, bleeding ulcers, neurological disorders and brain damage, premature aging, miscarriage, birth defects, impotence, infertility and a whole host of other diseases. It attacks the heart muscle and virtually every cell in the body. More research is now shedding light on the dangers of alcohol so it is not just a disgustingly stupid habit but a deadly one too. Why encourage or promote it? It is only a matter of time until drinkers will become the social pariahs they deserve to be & alcohol will become the next socially unacceptable behavior.

What part of one-stop shopping don't these people understand? This will likely be my primary grocery store once it opens, and it's not a lot to ask that I be able to buy all of my food and beverages at the same store. That's how the Safeway on Columbia operates, and in a year and a half of shopping there I've seen someone come in for the sole purpose of buying alcohol maybe two or three times. People simply aren't loading up on alcohol at the supermarket and going on benders. With the BZA and Graham backing Harris Teeter, all of this hand-wringing is truly a waste of time.

Albeit not as absurd as our counterparts in MD and VA (i.e., ABC commissions/stores), this is pretty ridiculous. Clearly these folks are concerned that AM's otherwise safe and clean character will be broken down into drunken choas just like that surrounding the P Street Whole Foods. Bet on economics...I look forward to buying a handle of vodka with my Vic card; just like in the good ole' Midwest and as it should be. Where do they find these people, seriously?

Since the small grocery store in Adams Morgan down on the corner of 18th and U street already sells alcohol, then why not.

um you are missing the point, there are zoning restrictions in A/M that restrick the sale of alcohol for the purposes of consumption outside of the establishment, its not ALL Harris Teeters just the one being placed with in the A/M zoning area.

yeah exactly why go after one chain when nthem others are selling kegs worth of beer each day? we should also go after 7-11, a thinly disguised convenience mart and liquor store that also happens to sell lottery tickets, milk, eggs, OJ, tobacco, on and on. So, why not shut 'em down too?

Why would they not sell when Giant and other grovery stores sell?
