I COMPLETELY agree with the last writer. ALL City Employees should be REQUIRED to use public transportation to get to work. Screw giving them cars and parking. If things are going to change, we should require the change to begin with those we elect to make policy for the rest of us. By their direct observations and experiences of the public transport system, they just might be able to make more effective changes in them.

I will change if the mayor, governor and all city employes change also. That means the SF mayor and all city servant use public transportation, BART and MUNI. No more perks like $40 to $50 thousand paid out to city manager for their own personal luxury car. And- do you really thing that taxes will solve any climate change. That is totally naive and dumb. Once people get a taste of how disgusting it is to use public transportation like MUNI and BART they will simply discover how stupid they have become in believing they actually fall for the rhetoric.

As a contractor, I need to move a substancial amount of equipment to a different worksite every day. The hours I work daily are not consistent. Public transportation would not work for me.

Support our troops, the nation swears. Well, using less oil would be a good start.A grass-roots effort by the middle class to reduce consumption on all levels would ease pressure on our need to be domineering as well as slow what seems the inevitable destruction of our planet's ecosystems. Less of everything, (except intelligence) would be the best strategy. Here in the culturally retarded Midwest, I'm afraid it's along shot at best. John, Branson, Missouri

Man has never been able to totally control Mother Nature. Never. Whatever reason you think climate change is occurring (natural cycle of the Earth and/or man's contributing factors), change IS occurring. It seems that it will continue. We can either learn to make subtle changes in our lives to adjust to a changing world or we can learn to live in VERY different ways after the whole thing goes to hell. Soon we may not have the luxury of selfishness and being stubborn. Change is happening, will continue to happen and we can adjust with it or be forced to live as Mother Nature tells us to. We do not own the Earth and those who think we do may be the first to do without.

Alot of jobs can be done at home via a computer and high speed internet access. Having to commute less or none at all would make a big dent in pollution. It would also save money for many people who spend money on gas, car upkeep, and lunch. There should be some way employers can make this happen. If they are unwilling, the government needs to step in and require it. Telecommuting is the wave of the future.

My new room at the Hotel is 15 square feet bigge than the one I just moved from but it's still a far cry from my San Francisco home that was foreclosed on by Countrywide last year. Would I be willing to move back to the smaller room without the spectacular view of the downtown skyline? Heck no! But I wouldn't mind getting my house back. And I doubt I'd give up my gas sipping blue smoke spewing '93 Miata convertible and go back to riding a bicycle like the one that was stolen from in front of the massage parlor downstairs. I seem to recall California once had a Governor whose mantra was to "lower your expectations." How much lower can they go?

Climate change is a hot topic, but there are a lot reasons why it'd be good for both individuals and businesses if we didn't have to go so far to work and to shop. We know it's hard to find affordable housing close to where we work, but turn the issue around: what can be done to create jobs closer to where we live?

I am fortunate that I can (and do!) actually walk to work. It saves me the hassle of waiting for crowded, stuffy, and filthy subway trains. It also facilitates my health and wellness, both physically and mentally.

I'd love to move closer to work, as would most people I know, but we simply can not afford the incredibly high rents in San Francisco. And I cannot imagine how the mayor could put a lid on that. Market forces and greed have pushed people out of the city, so we are forced to commute, often from places that do not provide transportation. What we need is a pre-tax housing fund, like we have for medical expenses. That would help a lot.
