The D.C. Council will vote today on a deal that would provide $79 million to enable Specialty Hospitals of America’s purchase of the Greater Southeast Community Hospital from Envision Hospital Corp.

“This agreement will allow us to move forward to save this hospital,” said Council Chairman Vincent Gray.

The deal calls for the District to provide Specialty a $30 million grant for building renovations and medical equipment, a $29 million loan to pay off the hospital’s creditors and unpaid vendors, and another $20 million loan for “working capital.”

Much of the money will come from the $220 million D.C. tobacco settlement fund.

As part of the agreement, the District must approve Specialty’s sale of any part of the hospital’s seven acres, and will receive 50 percent of the profits from sale of any of the hospital property.
