U.S. plans to go after al Qaeda cells in rural Iraq
- A top U.S. commander in Iraq said Friday that the troop surge had been successful in urban areas and that the military will now go after terrorists in rural villages. "We have been able to liberate the major population centers, provide more security and what we will do now is conduct quick operational strikes all around the country to go after these remaining small pockets.," said Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, the No. 2 commander under Army Gen. David Petraeus.

Al Qaeda cells scattering against U.S. offensive
- Al Qaeda cells in Iraq are dispersing from big cities to rural areas as they attempt to regroup in the face of the first all-out U.S. offensive against the terrorist group. Commanders in Iraq say they have chased many cells from Ramadi in Anbar province, Baghdad and Baquba, north of the capital. Ramadi is averaging just one attack per day, down from 35 eight months ago.
Officials play down al Qaeda's potency
- Al Qaeda has rebuilt cells in the vast tribal areas of Pakistan the past year, but the terrorist group is not at the same strength exhibited in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. officials said Thursday.
