day ago- On Saturday I joined hundreds of others to hear an update on a 14-mile rapid-transit line to run from Interstate 70, near Howard County, to Fells Point and Canton. The exact light-rail or bus route — those are the options — will not be known for several months. Construction is projected to start in 2012.

days ago- Once again, as the end of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination seems close at hand, the words of that great American philosopher, Yogi Berra, are apropos: “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
days ago- Time magazine has published another one of those silly and meaningless lists some in the media occasionally and irritatingly compile to validate their self-importance. It is the 100 “most influential people in the world.” I didn’t make it, but then I don’t make other lists like People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” which must be an oversight.

days ago- W ith student violence escalating in Baltimore public schools, adults seem stumped as to how to end this horror. Examiner photographer Arianne Starnes was assaulted by a male student when on assignment at Reginald F. Lewis High School in Baltimore. This was the same school where teacher Jolita Berry was brutally attacked by a female student last month. That incident created a national furor because it revealed the ugly mob mentality of the onlooking students, one of whom captured the incident on a cell phone and posted the video online.

John McCain had the idea, and pretty soon Hillary Clinton had it, too, and Obama wanted the audience to know what a fraud it was, although he left something out.
days ago- The recent conditional decision by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to permit a liquefied natural gas plant in Sparrows Point/Turner Station runs counter to our interests of protecting public safety, restoring the Chesapeake Bay and preventing terrorism. Plus, it pushes us further away from achieving energy independence. I would like to assure the citizens of Baltimore County and the region that I will continue to stand by the families of eastern Baltimore County in aggressively fighting this threatening and burdensome proposal.
days ago- Recent coverage of the repeal of the computer services tax in Maryland is reminiscent of George Orwell’s “1984.” Some of the same legislators who argued strenuously in favor of the tax during the legislative special session are now hailed as heroes of the repeal effort. As a few issues have been confused and distorted, we would like to take this opportunity to clarify some facts from our perspective.
days ago- It is only partially true that in presidential elections "as Maine goes, so goes the nation." The term emerged in the 19th century because at the time Maine held its elections for statewide and congressional offices in September, not November.
