Stanford's Clayton knocked out
- The dream season for Stanford freshman Alex Clayton ended when he was eliminated from the NCAA men’s tennis tournament by top-seeded Somdev Devvarman of Virginia 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the semifinals. Clayton (30-9) jumped ahead of the defending singles champion with an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but some costly errors cost Clayton the set — and eventually the match.
Stanford falls to Texas A&M, ousted from super regional
- The Stanford softball team was eliminated from the NCAA super regional after suffering a 9-4 loss to Texas A&M on Sunday.
Friends sue to save racetrack
- More than a week after a large crowd of horse-racing fans bid goodbye to the Bay Meadows Race Track, a citizens group at the frontlines of saving the storied venue has filed a lawsuit against the city of San Mateo, challenging the city’s environmental review of the racetrack’s redevelopment.

- A total of 12 errors cancelled out a spectacular triple play by the Lowell softball team as it fell convincingly to visiting Oakland Tech 17-3 at Lang Field in the first game of the Transbay Series.

- The Lowell softball team will be looking for revenge when it takes on Oakland Tech in Game 1 of the three-game Transbay Series today at 3:30 p.m. at Lang Field. The Bulldogs swept the Cardinals last year on the way to their first title since the series began in 1978-79.
Riordan’s Harlan repeats as All-WCAL first-teamer
- Riordan left-hander Tom Harlan was named first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League in baseball for the second season in a row Tuesday.
USF crushes No. 8 San Diego
- Kyle Morgan went 2-for-5 and was one of three USF players with a home run and Joey Railey extended his hitting streak to 16 games as the Dons baseball team used 15 hits to take down No. 8 San Diego 14-3 at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (31-23, 12-9 West Coast Conference) took the three-game series against the Toreros, winning 6-3 on Saturday and losing on Friday 4-2.
S.F. State adds four to volleyball team
- Outside hitters Kelly Burke, Lisa Morgan and Beth Perkins and middle hitter Sloane Williams have signed to join the San Francisco State women’s volleyball team, which is returning to action in the fall. Burke is a two-time All-Peninsula Athletic League team member who led Sequoia to a league title her junior year. She also played for Cañada College and Skyline College. Morgan, a La Quinta senior, is a three-time Desert Valley League First teamer. Perkins will be transferring from Mount Hood Community College (Ore.) while Williams will transfer from Lake Land College.
USF lands junior-college point guard
- New USF men’s basketball coach Rex Walters filled a big need when Eastern Arizona College point guard Dontae Bryant signed with the Dons. He joins Mitty forward Angelo Caloiaro as Walters’ first recruits. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Portland, Ore., was seventh nationally among jucos with 7.9 assists. He also averaged 8.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game.
CCSF's Masoli heading to Oregon
- The City College of San Francisco won’t have Jeremiah Masoli under center this fall. The quarterback who led the Rams to a state championship as a freshman is expected to sign with Oregon this morning, coach George Rush said. Oregon beat out Auburn, Arizona and Arkansas for the services of the 6-foot, 205-pounder, who threw for more than 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns.
