109 days ago - Often, when faced with two capable candidates, voters can’t see the fire through the smoke. They don’t want to acknowledge the inevitable winner both for the sake of being contrary and because this recognition would slay the underdog, blowing the whistle on the thrill of competition. They get caught up in the pomp and circumstance, enchanted by the rivalry itself.
130 days ago - Two weeks ago, it was Mariah Carey. Last week, it was Andrew Lloyd Webber. This week, it’s Neil Diamond. “American Idol” has really turned up its A-list juice as the show’s popularity has cooked ever hotter. This season, “Idol’s” big-name bake is practically steaming with star power.
137 days ago - If I were to admit in this space that I owned a few Mariah Carey CDs (yes, a few; i.e., minimum of three), that would be pretty gosh darn girlie.
144 days ago - If you were surprised by the elimination of Michael Johns, you clearly haven’t been reading this space, which slotted the now-axed Aussie ahead of only the seemingly invincible Kristy Lee Cook. The story of this season is rapidly becoming how long can the Lil’ Engine That Could stay on the tracks, because Kristy Lee is noticably outclassed at this stage of the competition. I, for one, can hardly make heads or tails of it. But there it is. At least Sanjaya was funny.

158 days ago - It must have been my week, because not only did this space nail Chikezie’s elimination, but my NCAA bracket rounded out rather nicely, too. I also hoped for one of the “Idol” contestants to transform into a gaudy stereotype — and, suprisingly, it really happened. Just not with the singer I expected. Read on.
165 days ago - Last week’s performances were so bad, there was only one group left pleased: the conspiracy theorists. Why? Because news leaked that, during the end of the program when the phone numbers are being flashed on-screen for voting purposes, Fox producers mix rehearsal clips with the real, on-air performance sound bites. So, the critics say, this allows the network to guarantee better snippets for its “preferred” singers.
172 days ago - March Madness arrived last week as the much-hyped David Hernandez (much-hyped for more than just his singing), who was ranked No. 3 in the Scott Fuller poll, was dismissed from the show. Let’s see which Cinderella fits the glass slipper.
186 days ago - Unless you live in Ohio or Texas today, you’re likely feeling a little left out of the democratic frenzy. Well, cheer up, comrades, there’s yet another momentous vote to be had (and in this case, you’re welcome to cast your ballot more than once!).
191 days ago - Last season, armed with superior talent, the women mopped the floor with the men. Tonight, we learn whether this trend continues, or whether we have further proof that men remain the superior gender. (It’s a joke, hold on to your e-mails, please.)
