Chilly Classic not right
- Call me crazy, but I do not enjoy watching baseball in late October. With no disrespect meant to Reggie Jackson, Mr. October himself, I consider baseball a spring and summer sport. Yeah, yeah, I know, the World Series is nicknamed the Fall Classic, but come on, baseball is not meant to be played when you have to wear a down jacket and ski hat to the biggest games of the season.
Everything comes together
- Tony the Tiger says Frosted Flakes are g-r-r-r-r-r-eat, but how about those Detroit Tigers? This oft-maligned team played g-r-r-r-r-r-eat against the A’s and won their first American League pennant in 22 years. After exceeding all expectations this season, Detroit has capably stepped into Cinderella’s glass slipper and now stands one series victory away from capturing baseball’s ultimate prize — a World Series championship.

Another international flop
- I became a women’s basketball fan 20 years ago. Not coincidentally, my interest in the women’s game corresponded exactly with meeting my wife, who, at the time, was in charge of all the women’s programs for USA Basketball. I went to Moscow to broadcast the Goodwill Games for Turner Sports and came home in love and a women’s hoops fan.

A good run for young 49ers
- When my 12-year-old son started junior high this year, he had a choice between playing football and running cross country. My wife and I left the decision up to him, but secretly we were praying that he would select cross country.

Hall brings flood of memories
- Maybe it’s because I am getting older. Maybe it’s because I am mellowing with age (my wife is chuckling as I write this one). Maybe it’s because one of the four players I was inducted with is no longer with us. Or maybe it’s just that I appreciate things more these days. For whatever reason, I was especially nostalgic this year as I returned to Springfield, Mass., for the Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Work still left to be done
- Nope, it wasn’t a fluke this time. This wasn’t the 2002 world championships in Indianapolis, where a group of spoiled NBA stars failed to put team before self. And this wasn’t the 2004 Summer Olympics, where a lack of team chemistry and preparation caused problems. No, this was the United States men’s basketball team just plain getting outplayed by Greece in the semifinals of this year’s world championships in Japan, thus losing the opportunity once again to play for the gold medal.
Mental mettle is magic
- My wife didn’t want me to write about Tiger Woods. She said too many people had written columns about him after he captured the PGA Championship on Sunday, the 12th major win of his illustrious golf career.
