Generosity leaves mark on area college
- First it donated the land where Howard Community College sits, and now the new student services building is named in its honor — The Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall.
Howard teens tops in ‘Pimp My Book Cart’
- Katie George and 10 other Howard County teens won a national library cart decorating contest titled “Pimp My Book Cart.” They decorated a library cart to look like a pink Cadillac. “Unshelved,” a comic strip about public libraries, hosted the contest. The cart made by George and her team represented Miller Branch Library in Ellicott City in the competition. Howard County Library will receive a $250 gift certificate to the “Unshelved” store, a custom work of art and national recognition.

- Howard Community College will host a social for alumni and their families to celebrate the grand opening of the college’s new student services building.

College croquet game set for April 21
- St. John’s College’s 25th Annual Croquet Showdown will be held Saturday, April 21. The game will start at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Party Tent, followed by a presentation of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion in the college’s Great Hall by the Reader’s Theatre of St. John’s College. At 10 p.m., a formal dinner, trophy presentation and dessert will be held at the Dining Hall. Discounted lodging is available for attendees. To make a reservation, call 410-571-0200.
Lecture on Chaucer’s work set for St. John’s College
- Christina von Nolcken, an associate professor at the University of Chicago, will be giving a lecture on Chaucer’s “Miller’s Tale” at St. John’s College in Annapolis. The lecture, titled “Another ‘Lollere in the wynd?’ Chaucer, his Miller, and Nicholas’ Door,” will be at 8:30 p.m., Friday, March 30 in the college’s Francis Scott Key Auditorium. A doctoral graduate of Oxford University, von Nolcken specializes in Old and Middle English texts and the history of the English language. For more information, call 410-626-2539
Howard offices to close for Good Friday
- Government offices, the animal shelter and public libraries will be closed in observance of Good Friday on April 6. In addition, the animal shelter will be closed April 7 and the public libraries will close April 8 for Easter.
