- Gov. Martin O’Malley recently announced the appointments of five new members to the Maryland Port Commission.

- During the War of 1812, President James Madison attempted to offset the small size of the U.S. Navy by issuing Letters of Marque and Reprisal to private ship owners. This document granted its holder the right to arm his vessel and act as a privateer.
America’s seaports honored
- Thirty-three American seaports were recognized recently for exemplary projects, environmental improvements, facilities engineering and communications at the American Association of Port Authorities’ annual convention in Norfolk, Va.
Port leader of the year
- Is there a doctor in the house? There sure is. He’s Frank Hamons, deputy director for harbor development at the Maryland Port Administration. Known as Doctor Dredge by port workers and mariners, Hamons doesn’t have a medical degree or have a remedy for the common cold.
The history of port communications
- By the latter part of the 18th century, the port of Baltimore was a hubbub of piers and wharves spanning much of Fells Point and the Inner Harbor. Convoys of ships, including the fleet Baltimore Clippers, sailed up the Patapsco River only to arrive in the harbor without advance notice to workers and businessmen. Logjams and costly delays were the norm of the day.

Port of Baltimore can react to storms with Hurricane Preparedness Plan
- In 2003, Isabel, a Category 5 hurricane carrying winds of 155 mph, surged up the East Coast with an eye on the Chesapeake Bay. Vessels headed for Baltimore were advised to mark an evasive course at sea. Ships in port were lashed and moored to piers.
A sad anniversary for Baltimore
- In the spring of 1982, a great ship departed the Port of Baltimore with a blank manifest.
Historic impact of the Dundalk Marine Terminal
- There is a workhorse in the Port of Baltimore that never rests. Working 24/7, the Dundalk Marine Terminal is the port’s largest and most versatile general cargo facility. Adjacent to Seagirt Marine Terminal via an internal connector bridge, DMT covers 570 acres of waterfront property. The multiuse terminal handles anything that can be shipped, including containers, automobiles, farm equipment and liquid bulk cargo.
Port of Baltimore partners with Suez Canal Authority
- In the sixth century B.C., Pharaoh Necho of Egypt ordered a canal to be dug from the Nile River to the Red Sea. Ships were forced to sail along the river on their way to Europe and India. In 1869, that ancient idea rekindled the opening of the Suez Canal. The artificial maritime canal is a two-way, north-to-south waterway which links the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. It is the fastest crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean.
U.S. flagged ships part of an elite fleet
- Aboard the HMS Tonnant during the Battle of Baltimore, Francis Scott Key wrote his esteemed poem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The attorney and amateur poet was inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying high, after a night of British bombardment on Fort McHenry.
