379 days ago - The 2007 season for the Washington Nationals ends Sunday in Philadelphia, after a three-game sweep of the Mets in New York. The team showed Washington their character and heart. Watching a young team develop is exciting.
387 days ago - Michael Burgess was named by Baseball America as the number one prospect of the entire Gulf Coast League, a great honor for the teenage outfielder and the Washington Nationals.
394 days ago - The final major league baseball homestand ever at RFK Stadium will start Friday with 10 straight games against divisional rivals Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.
400 days ago - ESPN’s Buster Olney went on live national television during spring training to predict the Washington Nationals would lose 130 games this year. He was wrong.
436 days ago - The trading deadline came and went with only two significant prospects being traded, both from the Atlanta Braves: catcher Jarrod Saltamacchia and shortstop Elvis Andrus going to the Texas Rangers for one of the only true impact players that was moved in All-Star Mark Teixeira. Atlanta’s John Schuerholz also picked up closer Octavio Dotel, showing the rest of baseball why he is the best general manager of our generation.
443 days ago - Last week we looked at some of our prospects who have succeeded so far this season, players who had advanced a couple levels and position players who had been promoted. This week we’ll take a look at more prospects, starting with the pitching staff at Class A Vermont.
450 days ago - Now that we’re past the halfway point of the season, it’s a great time to check out our future. Under the direction of Assistant GM & VP of Player Development Bob Boone and Director of Player Development Bobby Williams, the Washington Nationals are beginning to see improvements in our prospects.
464 days ago - The last two June Free Agent amateur drafts, we drafted 14 high school players out of our first 20 selections. This was done by design, as high school players after the first round have proven to have the highest ceilings.
470 days ago - Frustrated with our inability to sign outfielder Michael Burgess, the 49th overall selection in this past June free agent draft, I hopped on a plane Monday for a face-to-face negotiating session with Michael and his family.
478 days ago - The pitching in Vermont excites us, starting with Cuban defector Hassan Pena, who started the opener. He entered the 2006 draft as a possible top two-round pick, but fell due to injury and sign-ability concerns. He had surgery just before last year’s draft and we picked him in the 13th round. He did not pitch for us last year, but we had him on a rehab program. He’s been clocked at 94 mph in recent outings. He definitely has guts, character and poise.
