Corinne Becker: The good, the bad and in between of 2006
- As 2006 winds down and we look ahead to 2007, it is customary to take stock of the good and bad events that transpired in the past year. Some can easily be assigned such a black and white distinction, but most fall in a gray area. While we have many choices where to get our news in the information age, locally our choices are limited. The April 2006 arrival of The Baltimore Examiner gave us a desperately needed alternative.

- Without adequate code enforcement, any community will eventually deteriorate.
Corinne Becker: BARCS model for all animal shelters
- The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter Inc., or BARCS, serves as a model that every jurisdiction can and should follow. It hasn’t happened overnight, but over the past two years BARCS has transformed the city animal shelter from a place where animals went to die, to a place where they receive a new leash on life. That is something all city residents can be grateful for this Thanksgiving.
Corinne Becker: Baltimore County: Fund Animal Control to prevent abuse
- The Baltimore County Bureau of Animal Control’s policy is terminally flawed. On Aug. 22 at 7:30 a.m. I found a dog amid feces and without water in the “Safe Pet Kennel” at the police precinct where I work. The dog had been there since 4:30 p.m. the previous day. He waited at least 15 hours before an Animal Control officer arrived.
Corinne Becker: Towson University must adopt stricter off-campus behavior
- I was delighted to learn Towson University will adopt this year a policy on “Off-Campus Disorderly and Disruptive Behavior.” But my excitement faded when I learned of its limited scope.
Corinne Becker: Reject attempts for eminent domain expansion
- Many cheered when Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and County Council Member Vince Gardina announced plans to condemn the site of a former Shell service station on the Towson roundabout and turn it into a public park. The proposal seemed worthy considering the condition of this blighted eyesore, right?
Corinne Becker: Government should use eminent domain wisely
- Baltimore County has moved to condemn the long vacant Shell service station on the Towson Roundabout to redevelop it as a park. This environmentally contaminated site, an eyesore for years, is one that everyone would like to see removed. So, on face value, this appears to be an excellent proposal.
