Bradley Smith and Paul Sherman: It’s an unhappy birthday as campaign finance reform turns 100
1058 days ago - Jan. 26 marks a First Amendment milestone of sorts: The 100th anniversary of the first federal campaign finance reform law. Named for “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, a racist South Carolina senator who advocated the disenfranchisement and lynching of blacks and who was censured by the Senate for assaulting a colleague on the Senate floor, the Tillman Act banned political contributions by federal banks and corporations.
