Named for “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, a racist South Carolina senator who advocated the disenfranchisement and lynching of blacks and who was censured by the Senate for assaulting a colleague on the Senate floor, the Tillman Act banned political contributions by federal banks and corporations.
