Adam B. Kushner: The case for an international force in the Middle East
- The only way to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, I believe, is to deploy an international force to the blue line. But let us be precise: I don’t mean blue helmets like the useless U.N. “peacekeepers” of UNIFIL, who currently operate in southern Lebanon and have done nothing to stop the periodic launching of katyushas into northern Israel. I’m talking about the force of NATO or British soldiers with a mandate to disarm Hezbollah. But, first, a bit of history often lost in the current coverage.

- Even though I was always skeptical of holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, I thought the Bush administration deserved the benefit of my doubt — given the circumstances of their capture, the trove of intelligence they could yield and the nature of the threat they posed. But, since the first detainees began arriving in early 2002, each of these rationales has crumbled. This is not a new argument, but now is the right time to make it: President Bush should close Guantanamo.

- Last week in this space, my colleague Eve Fairbanks argued that we shouldn’t call the slaughter of Darfuris “genocide.” This line of thought, I’m horrified to report, is gaining in popularity, in large part because it serves as a pretense for excusing ourselves from direct intervention. Eve didn’t go that far — she admitted that the massacres “must be stopped, probably by outside force” — but she wanted to get real about a word that, she said, has been misapplied.
Adam B. Kushner: Army Corps’ admission of failure is little relief for New Orleans
- Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers owned up. The agency, which was responsible for building and maintaining the levees protecting New Orleans, my hometown, admitted that it had failed to engineer strong enough protection, failed to account for ordinary wear-and-tear, and failed to upgrade the levee system even as, in the years before Hurricane Katrina, it realized its own creation was insufficient.
