Cal Thomas: Barack Obama: Feeling good
- Politicians don’t usually get me excited, but Barack Obama does. Maybe it’s the contrast between him and the elocutionally challenged President Bush. Having lived through and reported on the civil rights movement, perhaps the source of my euphoria is the possibility of a black man being taken seriously as a presidential candidate when just four decades ago in America, he would have been barred from certain hotels, restrooms, lunch counters and neighborhoods. Electing Obama, some rationalize, might be the propitiation for our racist sins; a fulfillment of Dr. King’s dream about judging a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin.

- Last May, firefighters at a Baltimore fire station came under scrutiny for displaying a deer with an Afro wig, gold tooth, gold chain and a cigarette hanging from its mouth. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham, president of the Baltimore chapter of the NAACP, went ballistic, charging, “There is now and has been a culture of racism and white supremacy within the Baltimore City Fire Department.” As it turns out, it was a black fireman who dressed up the critter. Cheatham refused to apologize for his accusations of fire department racism, maintaining “there is now and has been a culture of racism and white supremacy within the Baltimore City Fire Department.”
The freedom of speech, and freedom not to listen
- There’s a sigh of relief waiting to be exhaled all along the broadcast dials today. Don Imus, banished from the airwaves last spring for racial toxicity, is reportedly coming back to the business. This will lighten the anxieties of all those who say provocative things into a microphone for a living, even as it infuriates those radio listeners who think Imus got what he deserved six months ago.
