Conduct compassion stress/fatigue assessment. Utilize strategies for minimizing/mitigating compassion stress/fatigue and recovering from it. Recognize the history, research, and theory of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Educate and prepare others to recognize and assess sysmptoms, and utilize strategies to mitigate/recover from compassion stress. treatment of work-related Acute Stress Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, clinical depression, substance abuse, and profound burnout in the context of the transformation toward wellness. The course provides guidance in effectively building a therapeutic alliance and focusing on the professional's current self care status, building a commitment to wellness and the motivation to fundamentally change her or his work life style toward a transformation. This transformation to wellness includes but is not limited to both teaching effective stress management methods for both containment/control of unwanted distress and finding and applying effective desensitization methods in therapy. The course is divided into 12 parts over two full days. Students are expected to become fully engaged in this course by reading and completing all assignments, and participating fully in all discussions and experiential exercises. Continuing Education: Thirteen and one-half (7.0) ceu's for LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, Psychologist, School Psychologist and Limited Licsense Psychologist. This course meets the Academy's standards for the Compassion Fatigue Therapist Certification in the Academy's Compassion Fatigue Certification Program. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participants will: Recognize the the array of assessment methods for both compassion fatigue, resiliency, and stress reactions. Recognize the array of treatment approaches for treating compassion fatigue and related work-related trauma. Recognize that strategies for preventing compassion fatigue are associated with effective self care and, thus the need to focus on wellness in the workplace. Describe the elements of the wellness and the MASTERS Transformative process Describe the challenges of working with those with compassion fatigue and how best to convince them that they need a comprehensive program of transformation. Describe the process of translating the data generated from testing and interviewing the client to designing a program of treatment and Identify self-care goals Describe the basic elements of a Compassion Fatigue Treatment Program. Understand and appreciate one's own journey to wellness and be aware of the requirements for getting there and staying there. Learn and Practice Meditative and Contemplative Methods Develop a path for one's own journey and the need for self care toward wellness. Recognize resistance to, excuses about, and readiness for wellness transformation. Apply the array of treatment approaches for treating compassion fatigue and related work-related trauma. Describe the ways in which Traumatic Incident Reduction can be used effectively to desensitize traumatized workers as part of a comprehensive wellness transformation process. Describe the ways in which EMDR can be used effectively to desensitize traumatized workers as part of a comprehensive wellness transformation process. Describe the challenges of remission in the journey toward wellness and the strategies to prevent it and assure wellness maintenance. Apply the wellness transformation process in one's own professional context (e.g., private practice, child protection, medical, first responders) Recognize and appreciate the challenges of applying the knowledge and skills of a compassion fatigue therapist to extend this knowledge through training, education, and supervision. The course will also consider the variations in cultural, ethnic, gender, age, and social status as it applies to various treatment approaches which can or can not be applied to these groups of children, families, and groups. Participants will also learn about case management, reporting, and other ways of working with these various traumatized people and groups. Finally the participants will be oriented to the Academy of Traumatology's Standards of Practice that includes the ethical standards for traumatology and the respect for differences. when working with traumatized, including those who are vulnerable to compassion fatigue. Course content includes a comprehensive overview of EMDR theory, research, treatment protocol, and strategies for collecting evaluation data when using EMDR. Students are expected to become fully engaged in this course by reading and copmpleting all assignments, participating fully in all discussions, and experiential exercises. This course satisfies the basic education requirements established by the Academy of Traumatology's Standards of Certification for Certified Traumatologists, Section D (approved treatment program). The syllabus reflects the following requirements: 1. Exposure to at least 7 didactic hours and 4 supervised practicum experience hours in the application of the EMDR protocol and method. 2. During the small group practicum, the ratio of practicum supervisors to students should be no less than 1 practicum supervisor to 10 students. 3. Students should give and receive EMDR at least four times during supervised practicum sessions 4. Students will be admonished about the need for at least 9 of the didactic hours and 7 of the practicum hours of the total 31 training hours minimally required before attempting EMDR with a client. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be: Familiar with the history of EMDR. Able to identify and define the EMDR basic concepts. Familiar with EMDR efficacy and their references Able to identify the legal, clinical, and ethical issues of the EMDR protocol. Knowledgeable about and practice the eight phases of the EMDR protocol. Able to master all of the skills required to use the EMDR protocol. Familiar with strategies for stress reduction. Familiar with the protocols for phobias, excessive grief reactions, and related applications. Aware of and prepared to apply the EMDR protocol to special populations.
