Federal rescue plans are all the rage in Washington right now, for what seems to be everything but the dollar. The U.S. currency is not going to get a bailout, even though its steep decline is feeding inflation and straining the economy. Congress wants to require executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to have their pay packages approved by the government as part of a bill to throw a federal lifeline to the mortgage giants.
Benefits of foreclosure rescue
The foreclosure rescue moving through Congress would let financially strapped homeowners who would normally be considered too debt-ridden to qualify for safe, government-insured mortgages refinance their home loans through the Federal Housing Administration to get more affordable loans with lower monthly payments. The nation's top economic officials urged Congress on Thursday to give them new regulatory tools to better protect the country from economic and financial havoc if a major Wall Street firm were to fail.
