One day after winning the Wimbledon title for the first time, Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Mercedes Cup on Monday with muscle pain above his right knee. Rafael Nadal's epic victory over Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final allowed him to significantly narrow the gap at the top of the ATP rankings. With darkness enveloping Centre Court and the clock showing 9:15 p.m., Rafael Nadal watched as Roger Federer's errant forehand settled into the net, ending what might have been the greatest men's final on the greatest stage in tennis. After moving within a victory of his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title, Roger Federer found time to catch only a few games of Rafael Nadal's semifinal. Federer does have a DVD of Nadal's match, but he wasn't exactly rushing to use it for scouting purposes before they meet for the Wimbledon championship Sunday. Rainer Schuettler has reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time, beating Arnaud Clement 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 8-6 in a match that took two days to complete.
Djokovic drawn into Federer's half at Wimbledon
Roger Federer may not want to look too far ahead in the Wimbledon draw. Waiting in the semifinals could be the dangerous Novak Djokovic. Five-time champion Roger Federer and top-ranked Ana Ivanovic were seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon on Wednesday. There were no big surprises when the All England Club announced the seedings for the grass-court Grand Slam, which begins Monday. Roger Federer just wanted to survive a couple of rounds at the Gerry Weber Open after his painful French Open loss to Rafael Nadal. Rafael Nadal claimed his first career grass-court title Sunday, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the Queen's Club final to become the first Spaniard to win on grass in 36 years. |
