After my friend/tipster Paul Kwan insisted on having not one, but two admittedly delicious Hakka meals at a nondescript, perpetually empty Geary Boulevard restaurant, which then announced it was closing three days after I submitted a review (my editors killed the story), Kwan had a lot of making up to do. He immediately called me about Pho Ha Noi, a new Vietnamese noodle house and cafe he discovered.
Recognize slain taxi drivers
I am recommending that a memorial plaque bearing the names of San Francisco’s murdered taxi drivers be placed at the Hall of Justice on the wall across from the murdered police officers, so that cabbies get more of the respect they deserve from the police and the public. For years, North Beach has been waiting for an inexpensive family-style Italian dinner house like Joey & Eddie’s. The Belgian beer craze has hit the Peninsula at The Refuge, a deli and pub that features the oddest conglomeration of food and drink I have encountered in 35 years of covering restaurants. French wines, Belgian ales and pastrami sandwiches — the most voluptuous, velvety, meltingly tender, luscious pastrami I’ve ever tasted — all share top billing. |
