Correction: Sudan-Darfur story
In a July 23 story about Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's trip to Darfur, The Associated Press erroneously reported that it was his first visit to the western Sudanese region in more than three years. Al-Bashir has visited Darfur on several occasions since 2003, most recently in July 2007. It was al-Bashir's first visit since an international prosecutor filed genocide charges against him on July 14.
AU to seek delay in al-Bashir indictment
The African Union will ask the U.N. Security Council to suspend action for a year on a prosecutor's request for a warrant to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for his alleged role in the atrocities in Darfur, Nigeria's foreign affairs minister said on Monday. President Omar al-Bashir's indictment on Darfur genocide charges presents the Sudanese leader with the most serious challenge to his 19-year rule, raising questions about his legitimacy that could weaken his grip on power. For years, Mohammed Ali has been hearing relatives and friends tell how government-backed militiamen torched villages in his native Darfur, raped women and shot fleeing civilians.
Arab League to discuss charges facing Sudan's prez
Arab foreign ministers are expected to discuss a proposal Saturday calling on Sudan's president to hand over two Darfur war crimes suspects to an international tribunal in an effort to fend off the longtime leader's own prosecution on genocide charges, Arab diplomats said. With an arrest warrant pending against Sudan's president, the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor said Thursday he was focusing on another war crime case in Darfur involving two suspected rebel commanders allegedly directing attacks against peacekeepers.
Sudan parliament condemns charges against leader
Sudan's parliament has condemned genocide charges against the country's president, saying his indictment by the International Criminal Court endangers vital peace agreements in Darfur and the rest of the country. Buoyed by support from the Arab and African world, Sudan's president showed no signs of giving in to pressure Tuesday after an international prosecutor sought his arrest for war crimes in Darfur.
US ambivalent on Sudan genocide charge
For years, the Bush administration has taken a strong stance denouncing atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region and labeling them genocide. Yet it offered only an ambivalent response when the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court filed genocide charges against Sudan's president. China urged the International Criminal Court to rethink its arrest warrant for Sudan's president Tuesday in a sign of Beijing's skittishness over its already difficult relationship with the African country.
