Myanmar junta dismisses Suu Kyi victory
The overwhelming election victory by Aung San Suu Kyi's party in 1990 has been nullified by the approval of a military-backed constitution and her National League for Democracy party should prepare for a new vote in 2010, Myanmar's state-run newspaper said Sunday. The cyclone that devastated Myanmar's heartland has also roiled a political landscape dominated by the military for more than four decades.
Blast hits pro-junta office in Myanmar
An explosion at dawn Tuesday rocked the office of a government-backed social welfare group whose members have been accused in attacks against Myanmar's pro-democracy opposition, witnesses said. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressed the U.N. Thursday to take stronger action against rising violence in Zimbabwe, and warned that President Robert Mugabe's regime doesn't appear capable of holding an impartial election. Myanmar's ruling military junta detained 13 opposition party members who called for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi as she marked her 63rd birthday Thursday, witnesses said.
