Charges dismissed against Marine in Iraq shootings
Charges have been dismissed against a Camp Pendleton Marine sniper accused in the shooting deaths of two Syrians in Iraq, Marine Corps officials said Thursday. Iraq's government hopes to bring the entire country under its security control by year's end. But one critical area stands in the way: the western province of Anbar, where the Sunni insurgency was born and later received its first blows from a civil uprising.
Lesser charges recommended against Marine
A Marine sniper charged with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of two Syrians should face lesser charges, the investigating officer has recommended. But he also sees peril and an urgent need to get the economy going - jobs, services, some semblance of regular life.
