A panel considering the governor's proposal to consolidate the University of Vermont with the five state colleges has recommended against merging the institutions.In a draft report released Thursday, the 5-member task force concluded that UVM and the five Vermont state colleges can continue to work together to become more efficient and offer better programs. But, they decided, a merger wouldn't work because of the difference in the cultures of the institutions and the students they serve.

A key Vermont lawmaker says he thinks there's still a possibility the Legislature will vote this coming session on whether to extend the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant's license.That word from Rep. Tony Klein, chairman of the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee, comes after Vermont Yankee's owners missed a Nov. 1 deadline set by legislative leaders for negotiating an agreement with Vermont's utilities on how much power from the plant would cost during a license extension period.

Vermont's largest electric utility is asking for permission to raise its rates by 5.91 percent.Central Vermont Public Service Corp. A 19-year-old collegian accused of sexually assaulting a Landmark College classmate says he's not guilty.Nineteen-year-old Reed Stewart, of Liberty, Ill., allegedly forced the 18-year-old girl - who has a learning disability - to have sex in her dorm room at the Putney college early Saturday. The alleged victim told police Stewart, a friend of hers, entered her room and told her roommate to leave before forcing himself on her.

BURLINGTONUVM graduate gets 6 months in frat cocaine ring
Prosecutors say a former University of Vermont student who supplied drugs to a fraternity house cocaine ring house has been sentenced to six months in prison.The U.S. Attorney's office says 25-year-old Bent Cardan, of San Mateo, Calif., supplied cocaine to the president and manager of the Lambda Iota fraternity house in 2006 and 2007.
