Crews pumping water out of the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead have reopened a second deep shaft that eventually will be used as the primary entrance and exit for science experiments.The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority is rehabilitating the former Homestake gold mine and reopening the 4,850-foot level as an underground lab.

SIOUX FALLSLower Brule tribe gets grant from Minn. tribe
The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota has been selected to receive a grant of $940,000 from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Prior Lake, Minn. The money is for economic development and community infrastructure.According to a release, most of the grant will help fund a new convenience store near the tribal government offices and housing area. Lower Brule officials say they hope the store can open by the middle of next year.

Northern State University, which has two wins and eight losses this football season, has relieved head coach Chris Boden and an assistant, Richard Sweeney, of their duties.Boden, who has been at Northern for four years, says he's "greatly disappointed." PIERRESD ranchers voice concerns about Keystone pipeline
Ranchers who live along the route of a crude oil pipeline that TransCanada Keystone wants to build across western South Dakota said Tuesday they are worried about oil spills and damage to their land, water and roads.More than 50 landowners and others showed up at a public hearing Tuesday night about the 313-mile Keystone XL pipeline. The meeting was organized by the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, which is holding a formal hearing this week on TransCanada Keystone's application for a construction permit.
PIERRESD judge refuses secondhand smoke testimony
The American Cancer Society cannot present witnesses to testify on the dangers of secondhand smoke in a trial that will determine whether South Dakota's smoking ban will be referred to a statewide vote, a circuit judge has ruled.The group argues that the new law, which would ban smoking in bars and casinos, cannot be referred to a public vote because it is necessary for the immediate preservation of public health. The South Dakota Constitution bars referendum votes on measures needed for the immediate preservation of the public health, peace or safety.

In a Nov. 2 story about a hearing for the South Dakota portion of a proposed crude oil pipeline, The Associated Press erroneously reported that the project's construction manager said access to medical facilities during construction was the project's biggest challenge.The official, Steve Hicks, said the remoteness of the pipeline route is probably the top challenge for the Keystone XL pipeline through western and south central South Dakota.
PIERRESD regulators to hold public hearing on pipeline
The Public Utilities Commission gets comments from the public Tuesday evening in Pierre on the $920 million, 313-mile stretch of the Keystone XL pipeline that TransCanada Keystone plans to build across western and south central South Dakota.It will be the fourth public hearing before the PUC as part of the Keystone XL proceeding. Earlier hearings were held in April in Winner, Philip and Buffalo.
