PROVIDENCERI jobless rate dips to 12.9 percent in October
The unemployment rate in Rhode Island has fallen for the first time in nearly three years, dropping slightly to 12.9 percent in October.The state Department of Labor and Training said on Friday that the state lost 1,100 jobs last month even as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of one percent, from 13 percent. It is the first monthly drop since January 2007.

Economic reality and money problems may be cooling the enthusiasm of U.S. college students to study abroad, just two years after students' interest in foreign study was at an all-time high.Four times as many students went abroad in the 2007-2008 academic year as 20 years ago, according to a survey of 985 schools released this week by the Institute of International Education, a nonprofit advocacy group.

A sea captain from Rhode Island assured his family he knew how to handle a pirate attack before his vessel was targeted off the African coast.Capt. Paul Rochford's (ROACH'-fordz) vessel, the Maersk Alabama, was attacked by pirates Wednesday for the second time in seven months. Private guards on the U.S.-flagged ship thwarted the attack with gunfire and a high-decibel noise device.

The chairman of the Providence Board of Licenses says he's withholding approval for parties at Brown University after a rowdy sorority-sponsored event at the Ivy League school last weekend.Andrew Annaldo told the university in a letter Wednesday that he wants it to explain safety measures it plans before he approves future events. The Providence Journal says Annaldo wrote that he was "concerned with the public safety implications."
