A Chicago man charged with sexually assaulting two children with developmental disabilities has been ordered held on $500,000 bond.A judge set the bond for 43-year-old Demetrious Hughes on Friday. Officials say he engaged in a sexual act with a 6-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl.
CHICAGOChicago crime down 10 percent so far this year
Chicago police say there was a 10.4 percent drop in total crime citywide in June compared to the same month last year.Officials say that at the end of June the city had recorded fewer than 200 homicides for 2009, a 12.7 decrease from June 2008. Overall, violent crimes were down by 4.4 percent and property crimes had dropped by 12 percent.
OTTAWAReport: Illinois nursing home allowed sexual abuse
The LaSalle County Nursing Home failed to prevent a male resident from sexually abusing 10 female residents and propositioning others, some who couldn't speak or suffered from dementia, according to allegations in a report this week from the Illinois Department of Public Health.The 61-page report details interviews with patients, nurses and other employees who described abuse that included the male resident touching female residents' breasts, trying to kiss them and cursing about sex in nursing home common areas.

Several thousand Illinois residents won't be able to hop in their cars and leave if they have one too many drinks at a Fourth of July party, thanks to a new law that already may be saving lives here and in other states.The law, which took effect Jan. 1 in Illinois, requires first-time drunken-driving offenders to install breath-monitoring gadgets that prevent engines from starting until motorists blow into the alcohol detectors to prove they are sober.

A campaign adviser to state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias helped a politically connected applicant who'd been wait-listed get admitted to the University of Illinois, according to a published report.The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that the applicant had ties to the Rev. Alexander Karloutsos, a politically connected Greek Orthodox priest. After the student's admission, Karloutsos helped with a Giannoulias fundraiser in New York that brought in at least $120,000.
