Twenty billboards thanking the community for its support following the death of Los Angeles SWAT Officer Randal Simmons are being installed around Southern California.

Simmons, who was 51, was shot in a February raid as he and other officers tried to stop a gunman who had gone berserk and killed several family members.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League says the first billboard went up Wednesday.

Simmons had been with the Los Angeles Police Department for 27 years and was the first member of SWAT to be killed in the line of duty.

Simmons is survived by his wife Lisa, two children, parents, and two sisters.

The billboards will be up for 30 days. The police union paid $5,000 to print them and Clear Channel Outdoor posted them for free.
