Art event expected to bring 50,000 visitors to NoMa
- Fire-dancing troupes and purses made out of encyclopedias are among the visual and performing arts exhibits expected to draw 50,000 visitors to the burgeoning "NoMa" neighborhood over the next five weeks for Artomatic.
Police blotter: Officer charged with driving under the influence
- Montgomery County police officer John Distel, 32, a six-year veteran, was arrested early Friday morning for driving his police cruiser under the influence of alcohol, Montgomery County police said. Around 1:25 a.m. Distel crashed his cruiser into a barrier on the left shoulder of the southbound side of Route 270. When officers responded to the accident they smelled alcohol on Distel's breath and arrested him, police said. He has been charged with driving under the influence and suspended with pay as the investigation continues. No one was injured.
Metro breaks ridership records in April
- April has been a big month for Metro - the transit agency broke rail ridership records three times in two weeks.
