Issue zero of the Meatpaper

Get in on the ground floor of this adventurous new magazine on meat culture edited and published in San Francisco by Sasha Wizansky and Amy Standen. These two literate and artistic young editors have produced a provocative, whimsical and politically open-ended journal on the issues raised by eating meat. Among the features in the launch issue are extraordinary photographs and a story about a village pig slaughter in Italy from John Caserta, a Fulbright Fellow from the Rhode Island School of Design; a reproduction and discussion of artist Michael Arcega’s mysterious SPAM/MAPS by Wizansky; and a fascinating article and drawing by Nicholas de Monchaux that demonstrates the uncanny correspondences between a map of Manhattan and a butcher’s diagram of a beef carcass. Meatpaper is a response to what the editors see as “a growing cultural trend of meat consciousness.” I’m certainly thinking more now about the provenance of the meat I eat and this insousciant little magazine serves up a big helping of food for thought.
