Bradley Smith and Paul Sherman, The Examiner Jan 25, 2007 12:00 AM (1067 days ago)WASHINGTON Jan. 26 marks a First Amendment milestone of sorts: The 100th anniversary of the first federal campaign finance reform law. Named for “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, a racist South Carolina senator who advocated the disenfranchisement and lynching of blacks and who was censured by the Senate for assaulting a colleague on the Senate floor, the Tillman Act banned political contributions by federal banks and corporations.
