Steve Eldridge: Ohio voters reject red-light cameras
Steve Eldridge, The Examiner Nov 15, 2006 5:00 AM (1133 days ago)WASHINGTON Regular readers know that I am not a big fan of cameras used to prevent things like running red lights. There have been too many situations where the issue of safety is not supported by the location or use of the cameras. In many cases, these cameras have been used for little more than to generate revenue for the jurisdiction, because the cameras have been placed in locations that work against the drivers. Some of the companies that sell, install and maintain the camera enforcement systems have been indicted for bribing local officials to get the cameras in place because the money is so big. Again, there are too many situations where the impact on safety has been negligible, while the jurisdiction’s coffers swell. Adjusting the timing of the amber or yellow cycle is a much better first step and has proven time and time again to accomplish the much-needed safety requirements.
